because computer cannot understand analogue signals like umm lets say telephone signals, sound light.. these are analogue or natural signals… so you need to convert them to digital so that it understands wats going on…. just like me using a translater to talk to you because i dont knw english

If that is the case, you use one because the older TV or recorder cannot tune digital stations itself, because its electronics are incapable tuning and decoding a digital signal, mostly because the technology didn’t exist at all, was expensive, or simply wasn’t required to be included, which would not raise TV prices.
