Digital Flat Antenna Problem?

Posted on Nov 05, 2009 under Digital news and reports |

I recently bought a digital flat amplified antenna (RCA model ANT1450B) and for some reason it just won’t pick anything up. I’ve tried searching with every setting possible (both with and without the amplifier) and i know that the tv is digital, so i shouldn’t need a digital converter box. I also thought maybe I wasn’t in range of any signals. I looked on www.antennaweb.org and turns out, yes there are. I have no idea what’s wrong. I even tried unscrewing the antenna cable from the tv and screwing it back in, just in case something was wrong there. I looked online and couldn’t find anything. Anybody have any ideas?

  1. I have a digital converter box hooked up to an old small bow tie antenna. It picks up a number of channels. Try to find an old cheap antenna to experiment with. Maybe at Goodwill. Be sure the TV input selection is set to antenna input.

  2. Allot of tv stations stop broadcasting over the air after the conversion to digital signal. Instead they have the cable company and disc network provide the service for a fee. In some location there are only 3 stations left, ABC, CBS and NBC. Check to make sure that your antenna is outside the house and pointed to the direction of the antenna for that tv station and no obstruction on the antenna.

  3. Several things come to mind:

    1.
Make sure you understand that every time you try to pick up a channel, you have to go into the DTV’s menu and have it scan for digital channels.

    2.
The building your in might be made of materials that reflect TV signals. Get a length of coax cable (~20 feet of so) and try taking the antenna outside and scanning for channels. If you have an upper floor, have someone hold it out a window in the direction of the TV transmitters and do the scan.

Maybe the antenna is defective. In North America analog and digital TV signals use the same antennas, so if you have an old antenna, try it. Yes, even a 20 year old "rabbit ear" antenna is "Digital".
