digital photography edits: saturation. how do you feel about overly saturated photos in photography?
Posted on Nov 05, 2009 under Digital news and reports |saturation.
how do you feel when you see a digital photo moderately to overly saturated?
(in other words, the colors are so bright and bold that they can look unrealistic)
i have to say that i really enjoy bright colors, except it really depends if oversaturation looks alright whatever the shot was of.
however, i really like the idea that people don’t edit their photos TOO much.
(i’m a beginner student photographer.haha)
i’m curious as to what you guys think??

I’m with you… I prefer non-edited photos… some people depend way too much on Photoshop… spend less time with your computer, and more time with your camera!

I don’t like it much at all. I feel like people who do that don’t know how to edit properly or when to stop. It seems terribly amateurish. And it hurts my eyes to look at them.

I am new to the DSLR and there are so many things you can do with just your camera. Ive read alot that you shouldnt depend on your computer to fix what you didnt get right, just try harder to get it right. But I enjoy editing photos and I might make 5 copies of the same photo with different edits. Different people like different things and I like to be prepared for that. BUT i like basic edits such as cropping, maybe lightening or darkening a photo just a bit, or changing to black and white, and retouching blemishes. (retouch is my fav, mostly b/c i have never had perfect skin and there are some BAD pictures of me out there..oh how i wish i could go back and edit some of them!! ha ha…

I guess I don’t understand the use of editing and this false purism?
How can anyone comment on "post processing" with the equipment used today? If I see a problem it’s "post processing" to eliminate the over "pre-processing" that was involved with the operation of a camera through the menu system.
Claiming a sort of purist status about an image created with so much use available to pre-process an image is a contradiction.
There’s no "purism" involved with digital period and I find this matter of associating elitism to "not" post processing an image laughable.
It’s like saying there’s no need for a developer or a print processing.
But over saturation is a condition, a term that defines too much - to answer your question. Sometimes you have to determine though, in color photography the principle at hand is? "Color" So the question is not over but rather proper use by the image taker to use "color" in the first place…it has it’s place.
What if I underexpose or over expose, use a fast or slow shutter speed, a small or a large aperture to gain an effect? Is that purism? No, it’s manipulating light and that’s processing what is real….. How is that any different then using photo editing? What if I use an extreme telephoto or an extreme wide-angle? Purist! What a laugh….

I’m not saying that I never do it, but for the most part I try to keep my images "natural" in appearance with true-to-life saturation. SOME subjects lend themselves to a bit of a boost and every now and then, when you go beyond reality, it just seems fun to boost the colors into the level of the surreal. Hey, an artist can choose any color of paint that they want. Why can’t we have some fun, too? On occasion!!!

my post processing is decided at the concept stage mostly just as the lighting and shot details are
post processing that is done as an after thought is not image making but picture taking
i like what slash can says, those say they are into "natural" photography or whatever are just lost, even their idol ansell adams spent hours post processing
i agree over saturated is a bad look
