4x optical zoom is a standard for low to medium range of p&s cameras - the digital zoom goes far beyond megapixels in describing camera quality. It’s a marketing gimmick that does not exist in reality. Only optical counts, so if 4x is a combined optical/digital - that’s pretty bad actually. That said, there are great cameras with small zooms. Because it’s the quality of lens built and the sensor and the processing engine that makes a camera stand out. Not zoom factors or pixel counts. 12 crappy megapixels is much worse than 4 excellent quality megapixels produced by good optics and nice sensor.
I totally agree with the first answer. Dont look at the megapixel as an indication of image quality and dont waste your money either. I would look for a camera with a 6megapixel and a 10x zoom optical…forget the digital zoom. Panasonic has nice cameras in the range. good luck.
