Advice on digital cameras, shutter speed, shutter lag, quality of photo, etc.?

I want to buy a good digital camera, that has a fast shutter speed 1/2000 approx. and also shutter lag is important..i don’t want it to take 3 minutes to take a picture! Ill be taking photos of children running around, and cars driving by fast.. ideally id like to spend less than 300 dollars.
Any suggestions.

Nearly all compacts can take an image at 1/2000th of a second in daylight so that’s not an issue. What is an issue is that you might believe that you can use that high shutter speed whenever you want. You can’t. Most compacts do not have direct shutter speed control, and even when they do, you need enough light, a fast lens and a high enough ISO to use that speed if you are not outdoors.
Shutter lag is an issue because not all compact cameras list the shutter lag time. If it’s a popular camera, you’ll have to do a web search and find a pro review that actually timed the lag. Steve’s digital camera reviews comes to mind.
Shutter lag usually isn’t listed or touted because most compacts are still on the poky side, so don’t be surprised if the info isn’t right out there in the open. Stick to the better names in compacts like Sony, Canon, Fuji, Casio.
