I can’t figure out what this digital camera feature is called?
Posted on Nov 30, 2009 under Digital news and reports |I have seen this feature that some digital cameras have where they take a picture in black and white and you can choose a color, lets say green, and everything thats green shows up green but everything else is in black and white. I understand you can do this same thing on photoshop but to be honest, I’m lazy and just want to know either what the feature is called and/or what cameras have it. Thanks!

I’d say something along the line of selective colour.

It’s called ‘color accent’ and can be found on many canon cameras, like the SD1100 IS
"Canon has also bundled their ‘color swap’ and ‘color accent’ shooting modes; the former swaps one color for another in-camera, and the latter retains one color but renders the rest as black-and-white. "

it is image tool in camera that lets you change color on any digital image while keeping light and shadows just as they were. This tool literally pulls the carpet under Photoshop’s feet.
Advanced image manipulation in the HSV color space.
Not only does ColorSwap make it extremely easy to change the Hue, Saturation and Value of selected image parts, but it also has a very powerful way of building the masks needed to perform object isolation, of ANY object in ANY image.

About the color accent option: it seems to be a current fad that teenagers are all excited about.
The camera keeps one color and turns everything else black and white.
I would never use such a feature for the following reasons:
• You are very limited in what you can do.
• The function isn’t always reliable or accurate. The camera’s idea of "red" might be different to yours. It will often include/exclude areas that you don’t want to have included/excluded.
• Imagine if you just happened to take your best photo ever, but instead of having a real color photo, you only have some partial b&w thing that might look totally awful. You’d kick yourself.
• If you do the "Selective or Partial Desaturation" (as it is called correctly) in post processing, you have much more control over it, and will get a way better result. Plus you can keep your original color version, too.
This also applies to any color effects done in camera like b&w, sepia or color swap - you’re better off NOT to. Doing such things on the computer gives you MUCH better control and a much better result.
If you don’t have your own image editor, you can go to http://www.picnik.com and use their effects menu which makes it very easy.
