Nikon or Canon digital camera? Xmas present.?
Posted on Nov 30, 2009 under Digital news and reports |I was wondering what camera would be best to go with..Canon or Nikon.
I personally have a Canon and find that it’s kind of annoying. When you first go to snap a pic a red light appears and then finally after a few seconds the picture is taken. I tried to snap a pic of my baby niece and she turns away because of the red light!
Does that happen in all Canons .. and does it appear in Nikons?
I was looking at this camera for me mom…

Are AA batteries better than the Lithium ion battery for a camera?
Thanks!!

Canon PowerShot A1100IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD

REVIEW:
I purchased this camera just before a 19-day trip to the East Coast and gave it quite a workout…nearly 2800 pictures taken during the trip, and only about 5 of them were unclear due to my unsteady hand. The rest were great, even zoomed out to a ridiculously large size on my computer, with crisp lines and faces, and vivid colors, far exceeding any 35 mm or digital camera I have used in the past.
The camera itself and the software included with it are incredibly intuitive. Though there are many manual settings possible, I set the camera in Auto mode and just clicked away. Many places I took pictures required me to turn off the flash, but even those were very clear and bright, and I had to do nothing but aim and shoot.
The delay time between pictures was negligible, and the rechargeable AA batteries I used were good for around 200 pictures a charge, even using flash and with frequent zooming in and out. I used a 16 GB SDHC chip and had the capacity to take 5,000 pictures! I’m still working on filling the first chip!!
The provided software is also very simple to use…as easy as plugging in the provided USB cable, and turning the camera on. All pictures are quickly and automatically saved in folders by date regardless of how many times in a day you download them, and renaming or tagging pictures is a breeze. I have not even begun making full use of the picture touch-up features, but the software includes a fun and easy slideshow application that makes sharing pictures via desktop or projector a snap.
Overall, I could not be happier that I purchased this camera! I look forward to mastering all its features, but as a user-friendly, versatile, and inexpensive point-and-click camera, it blew away all my expectations. It does all that Canon says it does and makes taking pictures fun and easy, right out of the box!

The ‘red light’ that you’re referring to is a feature added to your camera to help reduce ‘red eye’ in the photo:
http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller?act=GetArticleAct&articleID=126
If you don’t have that red light, then your niece will likely have evil-demon-eyes when you go to print the photograph. You can turn off the ‘red eye reduction’ feature, but without knowing which specific camera you have, all I can say is check your manual.
If you do turn off the ‘red eye reduction’ feature, you can erase the red eye on your computer when you upload the photos. You can also erase red eye after a photo is printed, using a red eye pen.
And yes, that red eye reduction feature would be common to both canons and nikons.
The camera you’re looking at, the A1100-IS, is a great camera and you won’t regret getting it.
As for batteries, your question doesn’t make sense. It’s like asking whether a round pole is better than a steel one. AA is a standard for the size, shape and voltage of a battery. Lithium ion is the stuff put inside certain batteries; usually rechargeable ones.
If you’re asking whether or not AA batteries are better than the odd-shaped canon battery, the answer depends on whether you prefer portability or the security of knowing that you can always have a spare battery on hand. Because AA is such a common standard, cameras that use that kind of battery can be a life saver when, for example, you are going from a wedding ceremony to the reception and realize your batteries are dead and you don’t have time to recharge them. If your camera takes AA, then you simply pop over to the drugstore or grab the extra set of batteries you carry around for just such an event. However, AA batteries are bulky compared to the battery that canon and others make for their cameras, so you won’t get a truly compact camera if you get one that takes AA.
If your question was meant to ask whether or not Lithium ion is better than dry cell (non-rechargeable) or cadmium nickel, then the answer is yes.

That happens with all compact cameras and you can turn it off. It’s called AF illuminator.
That camera should be fine for your Mom.
Lithium Ion battery packs are far better, not the least of which is the fact they are rechargeable.
Go with whatever camera you like better. Any of the 8 brands of compact cameras that exist.
