Few things you should remember while buying a digital camera for personal needs
1. Buy a Compact Digital Camera. Don’t buy prosumer or DSLR cameras. You won’t need them. They are bulky, difficult to use and are for amateurs who want to become professionals or already professionals.
2. Stay away from marketing gimmicks and take suggestions from professionals and not sales people. Buy the camera which suits you most and best fits your needs and not others.
3. Stick to Optical Zoom and not digital zoom. Since Optical Zoom is only going to give you actual and real zoom while Digital Zoom gives you an apparent zoom. Digital Zoom creates the same effect as that of when you zoom a picture from your computer. It increases the pixels rather than the original resolution.
4. Get hold of a camera which has a Optical Image Stabilizer.
5. If possible also try to find a camera which has a Drop Sensor, which when activated, helps the camera from any harm, if it falls from hand and hits the ground. The camera may break or be dented, but the images inside will be safe.
6. Your camera should also have a built-in Photo Flash and not a few LED lights like that in some camera mobile phones.
7. Red-Light should be in camera. You must have seen peoples’ eyes are red at night in photos. This happens because, when an abrupt flash hits their eyes it becomes red. So when the red-light feature is activated, while focusing the camera shoots a flickering red light at the people to minimize this problem.
8. It will be better, if the camera has got an option in flash which when enabled makes the flash to flash not in one single burst but in a continues burst of flash while you shoot a photo. This helps to stop people’s eye from being closed at night. Definitely you have seen some photos, where some people’s eyes are closed, and which are open they are not red. Because the camera which was used had the red-light but not the flickering flash.
9. The battery of the camera should be rechargeable Li-on, Ni-io or Poly-ion and not cell rechargeable batteries. Try to determine for how long you will shoot photographs. If its for longer than the battery provided, you have to buy a battery which has more capacity and will cost you more.
10. Camera should also have a self-timer.
11. You should be able to easily transfer photos to your PC / Mac and print the same. Photos from cameras which you can print directly from a photo printer without transferring the same to a PC before, will cost you more.
12. Mega Pixels should be anything above 5 Mp.
13. Buy the camera whose Menu is easy to use.
14. The LCD of the camera should be well-lit and bright enough to be seen clearly in a sunny day without using too much of battery power.
15. Remember changing options in menu, zooming in and out and flash consumes the battery power the most. While clicking the least.
16. Lastly if you want to have all the above features in your camera and expect the camera to be small, slim and fits easily in your pocket, then it will be expensive.
Features like face / smile detection, optical viewfinder (only in case of a Compact Digital camera), bluetooth, wi fi are all of zero importance. These are just marketing gimmicks.
Finally, I suggest you may choose from any one of the following: all of them are perfect:
Simple. First, look at your pocket and set a budget. Second, go to the store and select one within your budget that looks great with the color of your eyes.
To complicate things a bit, select only from Canon, Sony and Lumix. These three brands produce the least amount of headaches with compact digital cameras.
