Where can i get my digital photos processed into slides?

Posted on Dec 04, 2009 under Digital news and reports |

Ok, So I’m applying to Salem State College (WOO!) and I want to major in photography. But they request for our portfolio to be in slides (you know, like for projectors). Are there any places in Alexandria, VA that can do that? And what do i ask? also where can i buy a clear plastic folder designed to hold slides? HELP! Thank You :) I have all my photos in a CD, as well as in low quality paper. What should i bring them?
Here is what they said:
Art applicants:
The student must submit the same required documents as high school seniors. The student must also submit to the Admissions Office 10 to 15 slides of original artwork or arrange for a personal interview with the Art Department. Slides should be placed in a clear plastic folder designed to hold slides. A self-addressed stamped envelope should also be enclosed for return of slides. For more information regarding the art portfolio, please contact the Art Department at —.—.—-or e-mail —@———-.edu. The student will not be considered for admission until the portfolio has been approved.
(I edited contact info…I don’t know why.)

You can buy pages for slides through B&H.

I would just call the place doing the transfers and ask which they prefer-cd or prints.

edit-I would call them and see if you set up an interview and present prints or a cd for a portfolio and if you would still need to submit slides. Just explain that you haven’t shot slide film. If they still need slides, it may be more economical to get some slide film and shoot it, then have it processed and mounted rather than to have digital images converted.

You can pick up some B&W slide film at any camera store. I would definitely shoot B&W since you are not experienced with slide film and B&W is much more forgiving. But you have to have your exposure right on when shooting slide film so you might want to borrow a handheld light meter. If you don’t have a film camera you could find one on craigslist or ebay for under $50.

  3. It is clear that they expect you to to have been shooting using transparency material (35 mm chromes) and that their, at least beginning, classes require you to use some kind of film camera.

Any custom or professional lab can process E-6 transparency film, but the cost of making them from a digital file could be overwhelming if you can find a lab that can do that. And of course since they are second generation, so will not have the quality of an original.

My guess is you need to call the school and ask them if they only accept 35 mm transparencies.

Actually it is surprising that they even want a portfolio, unless this is a post graduate course and you are supposed to present a portfolio based upon your collected works. After all, you are going to a photo school to learn how to become a photographer, not arriving there already an accomplished photographer, right?

Something is not quite right here.

You may want to talk to the schools registrar and get a clearer description of the "portfolio" they require and why they require one.

Had I been required to submit a portfolio to Brooks, I would have ended up a land developer or something. I learned more about photography in the first seven week term, than I had in the past five years using the try and fail method. Expecting a new student to have complete control of their exposure before attending their school is silly
