How do you develop digital pictures?

Posted on Dec 29, 2009 under Digital news and reports |

Hi,

I’ve never developed digital pictures before, so I don’t know much about it. Is it a "do-it-yourself" sort of thing, or someone prints out the pictures for you? I saved all my pictures in a CD…do places like Walmart still accept CDs or do they require USB, or some other newer technology? I’d like to print out pictures to give to my parents for Christmas, so I also want to know how long these pictures usually take to develop? And what if the pictures are not the right resolution? If it is "do-it-yourself", will pictures with wrong resolutions still be developed? If it’s not do-it-yourself, do the people at the counter tell you they can’t print it, and they’ll just select the ones they can? Sorry for so many questions, but any help will be appreciated!

  1. Use the computer you’re using to write the question to [upload] photos to their website. An hour later, you should be able to pick them up, or have them mailed to your house.

You have to ask them why they couldn’t print them. Don’t just walk away (and ask us, because we don’t know). Were they so out of focus they did not think it was worth the expense (theirs and yours)–or did they look like something that you may have downloaded from the internet (for example, a headshot of a movie star that you obviously did not take yourself). Just ask the person why.

  2. to print digital pictures… you print them.

    -go to walgreens.com / walmart.com / wherever.com, somewhere that will do 1 hour photos.
-upload the images you want printed
-select the quantity and sizes you want
-go pick them up in an hour.

  3. You do not develop digital pictures, you simply print them off. Take a CD or USB drive with the pictures you want printed off to Walmart or Walgreens and they will just print off the pictures that are on the USB/CD. This process take about 15-30 minutes depending on how busy it is. They cost around $0.10/picture

  4. You could do as others who have answered have suggested anda take the CD in somewhere to have them printed off, but why go to the expense and bother to do that when you can print them right off your own PC and printer?

  5. When you take a digital picture there is no developing the pictures remain on the digital chip until you get rid of them or download them to a P C. If you own a PC and have a printer you can do it yourself rather then take them to a Walmart to have them printed.Depending on your settings on your camera. The chip in your camera should be able to hold hundreds of photos and keep them until you decide to get rid of them or download them to a PC computer and like i mentioned if you have a printer you can print them your self. Do your self a favor and read the instructions that came with your camera. A lot of good information you can use..

  6. I email my images to Walgreen’s. I imagine they can work from a CD or USB as well, but email is the most convenient.

A word of advice: left to itself, this system can be thought of somewhat as a total robot. This means you can control the image from your computer as to cropping, density, and color balance, but only after you have observed the output from your lab over several print sessions. Learn to use the controls in your photo editing software to improve the look of your images BEFORE you send them to the robot-lab.

It’s been my experience that most digital cameras shoot "cold," and the images often benefit from being "warmed" by adding a little yellow and red. Just because a print comes out of a big machine doesn’t mean the person who programmed the color analyzer has a good eye for it.

If you wish to print your images yourself on your own printer I suggest you get one that advertises itself as a printer for photographs. I have a nice little all-in-one that unfortunately sometimes makes my pictures look like they were made through a venetian blind, especially in larger sizes. When I am printing for display, I go to Microsoft Word, make a text box without fill or border, and insert the picture into it. That way I can manipulate the image on the paper better than my editing software does, and then add title and copyright information. I can also insert multiple pictures and text if needed, which my editing software doesn’t do at all.

  7. Wow… I noticed ALL your answers are getting thumbs down… are you looking for something specific?

You don’t ‘develop’ digitals. You can take your CD to Walmart and have them printed but remember that the cost of printing a lot of saved images is going to be pretty high.

You might want to put the ones you actually want printed on a CD for them. IF the resolution is bad, the images will reflect that.

It might be better for you to go to one of the Pharmacies where you can sit down and ‘do it yourself’. That way you have control of the cost and production and, if they come out different than what you saw on the display, they will fix it on the spot.
