Ok so we bought the new tv and the digital cable. Can anyone tell me if HDMI cables are necessary?
Posted on Dec 29, 2009 under Digital news and reports |We just bought the TV and have the digital cable. We hooked it all up but it seems no different than regular cable. Anyone out there have some good technical advice that can explain in terms I can understand I would appreciate it!

What your cable company calls digital cable is often a joke. Around here, they include the fact that to their box, all the stations that are NOT HD are sent in digital form. If the stations do not have HD in the name, ESPNHD, SYFYHD, TOONHD etc, then the station is not HD. On many cable systems, you need their box to get those HD channels. If you have to do that, then get a DVR and attach an external HD to it.
As for HDMI cables, this is the best way to connect equipment. One of the best sources is http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10240&cs_id=1024008

No, there is no need for an HDMI cable to connect your cable box to your HD television set. You can use a "component cable" which is less expensive and carries the digital signal just fine for cable TV. Component cable is the one with three plugs on each end, one is red, one is blue, and one is green.
You will also need an audio cable, since component cable only carries the video signal. The audio cable is the one with two plugs on each end, one white and one red.
You really only need to fool with HDMI if you are using a blu-ray DVD player; then you would want to connect that with and HDMI cable.
