Do I need a lens for a digital slr camera to take quality pictures?

Posted on Dec 31, 2009 under Digital news and reports |

I’m not into spending a lot of money at the moment on a camera, and I found a nice one, but it doesn’t come with a lens.
By the way, I’m not going to be shooting anything form a distance right away, so without the lens, I believe I will be fine.

You can’t take a photo with just the body !

  2. Absolutely not. You have to have a camera lens to shoot pictures with a DSLR.

you cant drive a car without its wheels.

  4. Hard so say without knowing exactly what camera but all three major brands (Canon, Sony and Nikon) sells a nice inexpensive 50mm f/1.8 lens. A good focal length for portraits. And nice aperture for low light situations. These range from $100 to $150. One step up for versatility would be an 18-55mm (this seasons kit lens) or 18-70mm (last seasons kit lens). Those will run you around $200 to $250 but give you more range but potentially slightly lower image quality and not as good in low light.

  5. If you are going to buy an SLR you are probably going to spend at least $400-$500 dollars and a lot of the SLR’s come with a lens. The best thing to do would be buy the kit because you can not take photos without the lens.

Or you can buy a nice point and shoot camera for about $100 and there is no need to buy a lens for those. Nikon’s are fantastic cameras in both the SLR and point and shoot!

I really have to laugh at some of these answers. But they are correct. Every camera even a $50 camera has to have some lens. For $450 to $500- you can get an entry level DSLR with lens. Check out Nikon and Canon. Go to Amazon.com and compare.

  7. If the camera happens to have a black body cap, you could bore a very small hole at the very center and transform your very expensive dSLR into a digital pinhole camera. You will be able to take pictures but don’t expect quality. With just the body alone, you won’t be able to take a decent photo at all. Sorry, dSLRs are just camera bodies. The lens is an absolute must have even if you plan to take pictures at the end of your nose only.

  8. A lens focuses the light onto the film or ccd sensor (depending on which camera you have) so without a lens (even a crude pinhole lens) you can not take a picture.

not all cameras have interchangeable lenses. it may be a compact, in which case you cant see the lens until you switch the camera on. But if its an SLR and its just the body, it must have a lens

  9. The idea of buying a camera in "body only" form is so you can add a suitable lens of your choice to it, rather than getting the often "cheap" kit lens that most cameras come with. Without a lens a DSLR will not and could not take take a photo. By all means by a body only camera, but you will need to buy a lens to for it to work.

My suggestion would be to not buy a DSLR but instead go for a SuperZoom bridge camera.

Well unless you want to go back to the age old "shoot through a small hole" yes you’ll need a lens that actually can focus.

There are different types of lenses the most cheap ones and much readable available are zoom lenses. They can change the focal length between two points, understand at 50mm the sight is as we would see under 50mm we get a "wider" picture with more on it and over it you zoom in! Allowing you to pick out a detail.

Also there are Prime lenses they only have one focal length but the money is spend in high quality glass giving you better and sharper pictures..oh and they are usually also wider open. Ah yes that pesky F number, see a kitlens would give you 3,5-5,6 and how bigger the number how less light falls through the lens. Now there is a use for F16 for instance landscapes where you want all the details. But less light also means longer exposure and more chance on handshake.

There are some more expensive lenses that offer Zoom and yet retain a F2,8 that is pretty fast. As fast as you’ll find a zoom lens to go. They usually are bigger, heavier, require bigger front glass but let more light in.

Now most people probably would use a 18-200/250 as a walk around. They come in different price ranges from kitlens cheap in where some sacrifices are made to top glass top price!

But yes you need a lens!
