Recommendation for my Nikon D5000 Digital SLR?
Posted on Jan 31, 2010 under Digital news and reports |I just got this camera and is new to photography. I was wondering what type of light/flash would I need to buy to take pictures in dark areas such as night clubs, bars concert ?

Nikon SB-600 is a good flash with good performance but if you want cheaper Nikon SB-400 is a good choice.

It’s all a game of subtlety, and playing your cards right, you don’t want to wind up with a broken camera, or worse a broken jaw. As a rule drunken peope and big cameras don’t mix very well.
At a bar, you could probably go with an SB-600, teamed with your kit lens, bounce the flash and drag the shutter, and try not to piss people off. Generally friday, saturday nights is a no for the flash, you should use a fast lens instead, AF-S 50mm f1.8 would be ideal
With nightclubs and gigs/concerts it’s a no-chance most bouncers are really fussy about anything more than a compact…unless you have boobs, know the performers, or are a professional hired by them. So a flashgun is an even bigger no-no. As a rule, the more exclusive the club is, the smaller your camera needs to be…Plus with all those drunken people around, I’d just leave it at home rather than taking the risk. If you do want to try and slip an SLR in, be subtle, use a 50mm f1.8 and play it down.
Alternatively get yourself a fujifilm F70EXR, which has remarkable performance in low light, and can even shame a number of SLRs at ISO1600…you’ll definitely get into less arguments with that.

Using flash in night clubs, bars and concerts is good way of getting thrown out.
I can speak for concerts, without a pass they won’t even let you in with an obvious camera for all sorts of reasons, copyright, health and safety, being sued by the bands agents, the list goes on.
Some people in night clubs maybe shouldn’t be there and most people certainly will not like you taking pics of them shall we say the ‘worse for wear’, and the management know that. Same applies to bars.
