Does anyone keep their digital photos solely on an online photo storage site?
Posted on Feb 04, 2010 under Digital news and reports |I’m trying to get organized and I feel like it’s redundant keeping my photos on my computer and uploading them to an online photo share site. What are some of the drawbacks to consider in keeping them solely on an online site?
Ok…after some research and reading responses, I think I have come to a decision…I think I will use Picasa - It looks like something I can organize my photos with on my own computer…and create back-up DVDs with…AND it appears that I can share directly from Picasa w/email…not to mention order prints from various vendors through them as well…Problem solved! Or are there drawbacks there too…if so, please share!

Why pay someone else to handle your personal effects when you can trust yourself virtually for free? I would suggest just getting a large 8 gb sd memory card. You can get them on ebay for like $15-$20. That will most likely store all the photos you’ll ever need and you can store it someplace physical that is not just on your computer. All these companies trying to sell online storage space are just trying new ways to make money from online consumers.

You know, I wouldn’t store online. A lot can go wrong and people have access to the sites and can copy your images. If they are family photos and it’s free, then that wouldn’t be an issue, but if you are storing quality photos online, then I wouldn’t. Make copies to dvd and keep those if you really want to use online storage - that way you will never lose the photos.

The drawback is: sh!t happens.
There is no guarantee that something won’t happen to THEIR storage. I keep mine backed up on an external HD as well as DVD’s.
I don’t even bother with online because I keep a lot of RAW files and batch uploading them is rough stuff. It just depends on how much insurance you want really.

i do.
i have a snapfish.
it holds all of my photos,
and i can keep them private!
its completely free, and, if i want to share some of my pictures with family and friends,
i can.
its wonderful and i suggest you get one.

Never, I keep my photos in three places, on an external hard drive on the web & on discs the discs I put in a safe and only use if the others get ruined for some reason I like to have backups, because It may not be possible to retake the photos I would rather be safe than sorry.

Stuff happens. It really does. I have photos backed up on my computer, on flash drives, and on 2 different photo storage sites, just in case. But I tend to air on the side of caution.

You never know when a site will be hacked & your work stolen or even deleted.The safe thing to do is put them on a CD / DVD, or a flash drive.
