When do you think books, magazines and newspapers will be replaced by online/digital media?

Posted on Feb 04, 2010 under Digital news and reports |

Books, magazines and newspapers being replaced by e-books, e-magazines and online news say in two years’ time? Would YOU choose the e-versions or still buy the physical versions of them?

  1. In less than 20 years

  2. i use both

  3. Yes, because of natural resources and greenhouse effects. It simply saves a lot of money too.

i think in the next 10-20 years and it will be hard to find proper books.
i love the proper books but going on holiday i like the E books and such.
btu nothing will beat the proper thing

  5. Not for a very long time. Most people I know still prefer the physical document in their hand, especially when dealing with school books and other scholarly documents.

  6. They are being replaced right now. I would choose e-versions they are greener because they are not wasting paper to print them on.

Altho books and mags will dwindle, I can`t believe they will ever be totally replaced by online books etc. There will always be some people who don`t use computers or the Internet - and many who will still prefer to settle down with a good book, in bed or in the garden etc.

no i don’t think so… the newspapers has been used for several years and otherwise people dont’ have enough money to buy the electronics needed to read the news…. well in several years maybe :)

  9. Never. There will always be a demand for a hard copy of things. You can take a hard copy anywhere, and not rely on battery power. Couple this with the fact that many providers put "caps" on how many times you can download something, that technology and thus the formatting of e-books will change every few years, and limited consumer rights. If you buy a book, you own that book. You can give/loan that book, or sell that book. You can have a book 50 years and still be able to read it. If you have an E-book, you will really own that book for as long as you own the device you read it on (2-5 years). If you have an e-book, you have no consumer rights whatsoever. Its inconvenient and unprofitable for the consumer.

  10. While digital media today is convenient, it is written paper documents which have provided us with a historical record that has lasted for thousands of years, preserved until today.

Paper is tangible. Ones and zeros are not.

  11. I hope never in the case of books, i enjoy the E Reader because i read a lot, but for all my favourite books, i like to keep them to give to my children one day… but we read magazines and newspapers so often that its a big waste and would be better to have it all electronically.

  12. Hopefully there will always be a print version. Studies have shown that excessive use of hand held electronics of all forms can lead to vision problems (I read somewhere on paper don’t have link). To have everything in a digital electronic format could potentially be dangerous because of several reasons. 1. Having a written copy of things in history is best because you never know if electricity will be around forever, oral language and hand-writing will. 2. We are in the era of things being "photoshopped" which could mean that things could get edited and adulterated from their original form. There is a great deal of mistrust when it comes to electronic media because of the fact that things could be edited in a variety of ways to portray something that may in fact not be true. 3. There is nothing better than the smell, look, and feel of a new book in your hands. There is something real about holding an item written on paper vs. reading something digitally. The comfort of reading something digitally is not as good as the comfort of reading something on paper.

I’d say publishers will always make print versions of books but eventually they will be like comic books. They will be collectors items. E-media is so much cheaper. With emedia you just enter the word documents into a publishing program and sell the document. With printed material you have to buy paper cut it to shape, buy ink, have a binding machine, Then the machine to print the books. the warehouses to store the books until they are shipped. the shipping fees themselves. emedia is the future
