Which digital SLR camera to buy?
Posted on Feb 04, 2010 under Digital news and reports |I’m trying to decide between a used Canon EOS 20D that would not come with a protection plan but is a good price, or a newer Canon EOS XSI that would be brand new full price and a protection plan can be purchased with it. Which is a better camera? Why?

EOS XSi…newer, bigger sensor, LCD, digi 3 processor, etc.

Gosh. Neither is really better. The 20D is physically a more robust camera. The XSi has better image specifications.
I think I would choose the XSi because of the higher resolution and the rumor that it handles noise better.

My two cents–get the best camera you can afford. Read the online reviews and figure out what camera and lenses that come with it work best for the type of photography you’re doing.

The 20d isnt a terrible camera. but its honestly not that good. its completly obsolete. the cannon eos XSI is great. but your better off with a cheaper camera.. so you can spend more money on lesnses!
or you can go nikon and get the Nikon D70! or downgrade to the d3000 which is great for beginers

A year ago I opted for the Canon Xsi and I haven’t regretted it. It has a lot of features, including the option of operating it in a fully manual mode.
Images are excellent, even blown up to 18 by 12 inches (the largest I have attempted) On my home inkjet, I get excellent 8 by tens.
I also REALLY get a kick out of the Image Stabilization feature. Even with my long lens (55-250 mm zoom) I can get crisp, clear images in low light situations. Last October, I did a wedding, indoors with limited lighting. With my telephoto extended and the camera set to 1600 ISO, I opened my apreture wide and shot at speeds down to 1/15 of a second and got some spectacular shots. Admittedly, only the shots where the subjects were standing still came out, but, because of the absense of shutter lag, I was able to time most of them well. For anyone who has ever tried shooting long lenses at slow shutter speeds, you have to appreciate a feature like this.
I am also quite pleased with the battery life. I was used to having to replace batteries several times during a shoot with my previous cameras. I always carried five or six sets of recharable NiMH batteries. With my Canon, I carry ONE extra battery and I have NEVER had to swap it out in a single day’s shooting. Of course, I always start out a day’s shoot with a freshly charged L-Ion battery, but it seems to last forever on a charge.
I bought mine via Amazon and saved about $300 off the MSRP. It was packaged with the usual 18-55 mm zoom lens. However, this package was still cheaper than some sites advertised for the camera body alone.
I realize that this is still an entry level DSLR, but I find it a VERY capable camera, comperable in quality to some of the best fim cameras I used to shoot with in the sixties and seventies.

The 20D has a Digic II processor, the XSi I believe, has a Digic III processor , giving you better image quality, and faster performance.
