How does digital zoom work exactly?
Posted on Feb 28, 2010 under Digital news and reports |I just ordered a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 digital camera that I bought mostly because of its high optical zoom for a P&S and also because it seemed better in reviews than the Canon SX200 IS, even though I’ve always been partial to Canons
My question is though, how much does digital zoom degrade picture quality when combined with optical zoom? For example, the ZS3 has 12x optical and 4x digital and is 10.1 megapixel, so I’m assuming that maxed out, I would get 48x. But what would the quality of such a picture be? Would it be 10.1/4 = roughly 2.5 megapixel, or does that work differently?
Yes yes, I know that digital zoom degrades quality, I am trying to figure out at which ratio though. Assuming I used 12x optical and 3x digital for a picture, would I get a pic with roughly 3.3-3.4 megapixel quality? Since that would still look very good in normal print size

Think of it like this. Digital zoom is just "zooming" in on the picture as it is.
So if you took a picture on your computer and then just kept zooming in on it (and the photo eventually starts looking grainy)….same thing essentially.
Use digital zoom as little as possible.

Digital zoom does nothing but degrade the quality of the picture. It is not really zoom, it just enlarging. Optical zoom is the opposite.

I don’t know how to put it in math.
Optical zoom is achieved by modifying the glass pieces in the lens to attain magnification. The picture is created as it passes through those glass pieces and hits the digital sensor. Nothing is modified.
Digital zoom is done after a picture is captured from the digital sensor. The picture is broken up to pieces then enlarged. The original pixels that form the picture are pulled apart and the resulting spaces are filled out through extrapolation, guesswork or witchcraft through software.
Picture degradation through digital zoom becomes obvious even at its lowest level. Parts of it are no longer from the original shot. Using more of it means putting more non-original dots on the resulting picture. Computers aren’t that good yet in guessing what to put in there so the result will always come out pixelated.
After purchasing a digital camera, the first thing I do is to disable digital zoom. It is always better to use your own legs and walk towards your subject rather than use digital zoom.

Digital zoom is functionally exactly like resizing/enlarging a jpeg in any basic photo editor on your pc. I say ‘basic’ because the enlargement algorithms aren’t very robust like you would get in Photoshop or any of the better photo editors.
And like the other mentioned, it should always be off in you camera. Use a decent photo editor on your pc and you have much better results.
