What are fully adjustable SLR, DSLR or prosumer digital cameras?
Posted on Feb 28, 2010 under Digital news and reports |I am going to be taking a course in photography and it says a fully adjustable SLR, DSLR or prosumer digital camera is required. I was wondering if this camera is a prosumer camera because I know its not a DSLR or SLR.

For $479, get yourself a dSLR instead. What you show us is a (good) point and shoot camera but you can’t change its lens, thus in the future, when you’re ready to ‘grow", it won’t with you.
All dSLR are fully adjustable–this means you can change, at will, the shutter speed, its aperture, and the ISO settings. Some even have depth of field previewer too.

The Sony HX1 is a point and shoot super zoom (prosumer/bridge camera). Abe’s of Maine has it for $420+shipping on line with lens. Once one start spending around $400+ it doesn’t pay to get this type of camera. At this point I’d buy an entry level DSLR of Nikon or Canon.
If you do not want to spend big bucks, consider the Fuji S1500. It’s $170+shipping at Amazon.com. Very good image quality, has shutter/aperture priority, and is very good on batteries, has viewfinder.

You might want to get some more info on the ‘prosumer’ moniker. The reason I say that is that sometimes that term is used to describe those megazoom cameras, you know they are like wannabe dSLRs and sometimes the term is used to describe entry level dSLRs.
What you’ve given a link to has more controls and options than a standard compact point and shoot, but don’t be fooled by its looks. The image sensor in the HX1, which is the heart of any camera is the small, cheap junk found in all the compact point and shoots. I saw the price too, 499 MSRP, for that money, just get a real dSLR like a Sony A230, if you are going to spend Lexus money get a Lexus not a Camry. At the Sony store, the HX1 is 499 marked down to 479.
