Can I disconect and/or remove the power to Western Digital’s my book and still expect it to hold data?
Posted on Mar 08, 2010 under Digital news and reports |Where can I find simple practical instructions on how to use a Western Digital’s "My book"? Is it simply a hard drive that needs to be connected to the computer and the power all the time?
I was under the impression it would make a copy of everything in a hard drive and then you could disconect "My book" from the computer.
Does the device record the files automaticly, or do I need to do something to make it work?

You have to tell it what to save. Usually there will be software for back up installed on the drive, at least there is on mine. And yes you can unplug it as long as it isn’t running at the time.

The My Book is just an external hard drive. Inside is a regular hard drive you might find inside your computer, just in an enclosure that lets you access it through USB. It will not automatically copy files to itself by default, although you can use programs to automatically back up files to it (certain versions of Windows will do this fairly easily for you).
As for needing to be plugged into the computer all the time: no, it will not lose data if you unplug it. If you ever want to remove it, look on your System Tray (next to the clock) for an icon that says Safely Remove Hardware when you hover over it. If you click this before removing the device, it will make sure that no programs are using the device, and then disable it so that you can remove it without interrupting any programs that are trying to read from/write to it.
If you want to manually add files to it, after you plug it in, it should show up as a drive in My Computer, and you can drag and drop files to it like you would on your computer’s hard drive.
