From the looks of it, the DSC-H7 is completely useless at ISO 800 and above ( http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/SonyH7/page6.asp ) That’s a pitty, because ISO 800+ is what you need for live band shots.
If this is a big priority, upgrade to a dSLR camera and perhaps a fast prime lens.
If you want to keep using the Sony, however, you do have some advanced options that you can use. This list might sound like a p.i.t.a., but shooting live bands is asking a lot from any camera. Here’s the settings:
* Spot metering
* Central AF point only
* Aperture priority mode
Then, during shooting…
* Always keep the aperture at the smallest possible f-number (2.7 when you zoom out, up to 4.5 when you zoom in all the way.)
* Start with ISO 400 and crank it up as needed to get a usably fast shutter speed.
* Take all shots with a band member’s face in the center of the frame. Crop images on the computer if you want to recompose a shot.
