Comcast digital transition?

Posted on Mar 10, 2010 under Digital news and reports |

I currently have comcast cable (I believe the the digital basic package). We have several tvs in our house. A few of our tvs are newer plasma and lcd and we also have several older cable ready tvs. In our area they are going digital on many of the channels we are currently paying for. They tell me I need a box to continue viewing these.
Do I need the box on each tv to really do this or will the newer ones be able to continue as normal. No one at comcast knows if some tvs will continue on or not.

I believe the HDTVs will pick up random channels and you dont need a box

Comcast went all digital in my area a few months ago.. and i havent been able to get any channels other than abc, nbc, fox (local)

I rescanned my hdtv last night and i have every single one of my channels back.. just not what im used to..

    like 76.5 is tnt

Dont take my word on it. but if i get all those channels you should too

The older tvs will need a box…

    Call comcast
you get 2 small boxes and one big one (the on demand one) for free.. additional boxes cost extra

  2. You will require a set-top box for each TV. Even for newer TVs with built-in QAM cable tuners, you will only be able to pick-up a handful of channels in most cases, i.e. the channels Comcast decides to broadcast ‘in the clear’ as free unencrypted channels.

Typically the only channels that are unencrypted are the same as the over-the-air antenna channels, but it may vary depending on location/provider (I’ve heard some people say they can pick-up digital cable channels free and ‘in the clear’ right now with Comcast, but I wouldn’t count on this lasting and it could just be temporary since anyone could access those channels for free even without having Comcast service, and that seems a bit strange).

The authorized set-top box Comcast provides is able to decode and play the encrypted cable channels that you are paying for as well as provide additional interactive functionality like Video On Demand.

Some TVs have cable-card support. In this case, it is possible to obtain a cable-card from comcast and have it installed in your TV. The authorized cable-card will enable your TV to decrypt the encrypted cable channels you are subscribed to. In this case, you do not need a box, but you may still be charged for the cable-card.

    Update:
It seems to me that Comcast has made an error somewhere.

Typically cable companies only broadcast antenna channels ‘in the clear’ so they are free and unencrypted for anyone to view.. but many people have been claiming they are receiving all the cable channels from Comcast ‘in the clear’ and can pick them up with out a box.

To me this doesn’t make sense because those cable channels would be free for anyone to access even if they didn’t have cable tv service with Comcast.

People are also saying they used to only get a few channels ‘in the clear’ before, and something has changed recently. Quite frankly I think Comcast is accidentally broadcasting all the channels in the clear, and while you may be able to pick them up without a box now, I really suggest you don’t count on being able to that in the future. I suspect Comcast will try and restore it to how it was before.

  3. Any newer plasma or LCD TV does not need any type of converter box to receive digital broadcasts.
Older CRT televisions ( thats the ones w/ a picture tube) need to be connected to a converter box or a Comcast cable box to receive and display digital signals.
