My Sony SLR digital camera is broken i think, the image on the LCD screen displays up and to the left.?

Also looks like this in the viewfinder, and all of my images that I print out are cropped up and to the left with all this negative unused space in the bottom and right side of the image. Is this a Lens Problem? Is this a viewfinder setting? a camera setting? or is the body broken? or maybe just updating the software on it will fix it??????? Please help!!!!
Actually, The camera is a students of mine, She is taking my digital photography class and this happened to her camera. She has a Sony, slightly older version. I know that I was hoping it was a quick fix, viewfinder setting or new software. Hopefully it’s not thet lens, body or whatever. So I can’t upload a pic of the problem
