What functions should a basic digital camera have?
Posted on Mar 11, 2010 under Digital news and reports |i am thinking of buying a digital camera, basic ones and i know nothing bout digital cameras. Is there anything that i should consider before i buy one? for instance, like the basics that a digital camera should have.

Almost any digital camera on the market should produce good pictures. At that level, probably the most important decision is zoom or no zoom? (Zooms are more expensive.)
Ease of use is another consideration.
Consumer Reports periodically reviews cameras. They are probably at your local library.

The camera should have a minimum of 5 mega pixels and a 5x zoom=basics.
You want a camera that takes good pictures..you can’t tell that with a 4×6 print, so:
Make sure your have a ten day return policy, keep everything in perfect condition for returning, box, instruction book (do not write in it) and warranty card (do not send it in).
Take some pictures the same day. Take your memory card to you local film processor. Have an 11×14 print made (about $4) of any shot that is sharp. Results: if you like the print keep the camera, otherwise return it.

It should have a minimum of six megapixels. A lot of the good printing labs insist on an image of at least six megapixels in order to get good looking prints.
Most cameras have a wheel at the top that controls what mode the camera is in. Many digital cameras just have a little picture of a mountain, a flower, a face, etc. These are called scene modes, and if the camera only has scene modes, it is not a good camera. You should see the letters P A S M on the top wheel, or P Av Tv M, which is the same thing. These stand for Program, Aperture priority, Shutter Priority, and Manual, and they are much better ways of controlling your camera than just scene modes.
It should either have a built in flash, or it should have a hot shoe for attaching a flash.
Whether it zooms or not, it should have a good quality lens. Some good lens names to look for are Nikon, Nikkor, Canon, Zeiss, and Leica.
It should have a fast aperture, at least at the wide end. Look for f/2.8 or f/2.
With the exception of a memory card, it should come with everything you need, such as a battery charger (unless it takes AA batteries) and a cable to connect it to your computer. Don’t buy from a shop that charges extra for these things.

My camera only has 3 megapixels and I can get very good 4×6 prints from my lab(s).
All digital cameras will have the basic things you need. Any differences between cameras will usually be extra features that may or may not be handy, but that you don’t really need (things like smile or face detection, live view, waterproof, RAW format, etc.). Although it helps to be able to control the shutter speed and aperture, plenty of cameras work fine without this (you just have to know how to work around these limitiations).
