What kind of digital video camera/camcorder should I buy for $500-1000? What format?

I got a job as a video producer this summer at a camp and they use sd card. Is this the best format? I’ve always used mini-dv in the past, but I think some other formats might be better.

when I figure out the format I can start to look for the best quality camcorder in my price range
Primary use of camcorder is to film skateboarding. Will need good low light feature as well

For video quality your list,
1 Mini-DV
2 Sd card flash memory (both the same)
3 Hard drive camcorders,
4 dont even consider Mini-dvd
No’s 2&3 just a simple copy to the computer, but in many cases the video needs to be converted, unless you are using a editor that will edit the compressed video formats. Probably the most popular for home use. Do not record fast action well, HDD camcorders do not like vibration, nor altitude, out of those two SD/flash drive cameras are better.
No 1 Best format for quality and editing, 99% of editors will work with the video format, quality is as good as your camera will produce, need a Firewire card (IEEE1394) capture is slow (real time) people seem to want to get the video onto their computers as fast as they can, but then they need to spend as much time converting the video into something their free editors will edit.
No 4 worst of all formats, quality bad, many problems with conversion, disks not reading, unable to finalise the dvd’s the list goes on, also in its best quality you can only get around 24 minutes on a disk.

The best camcorder by far for this kind of thing is the Panasonic High Definition AG-HMC40 AVCHD Camcorder. This thing is a dream and once you use one you’ll never bother with DV tapes ever again.
The video quality is outstanding and for shooting skateboarders in low light and still have sharpe images this camera is what you need. It shoots in true HD and with high capacity SD cards (think of sd cards as DV tapes) you just pop it in the camera..shoot your video..if the card fills up..who cares..pop a new one in..because when your done and your ready to edit your video this is where the magic happens..
pop those sd cards in your pc and dump your video files..done video ready for editing..slow video capture from tapes is ancient history these days..
