Basically the thickness of the wire, the shielding and the build quality is all that makes a difference..brand name doesn’t make much difference other than certain brands have a reputation for making quality cables which may be a good idea to stick with if you are buying the cables over the Internet and don’t know what to look for…brands that have good reputations sold over the Internet are Blue Jean Cables; Monoprice: Mediabridge, but there are others that are also good but are less well known…Monster Cables are good but boy are they expensive, a lot of people buy these for convenience and security at local shops…because they really don’t know what to look for…In HDMI you want to look for Category 2 or 3 certified and 1.3 or 1.4 high-speed also if you can see the cables they should have HDMI stamped on the jacket of the connector…also the longer the length of the wire the more critical the quality becomes in short runs under 15ft any cheap cable will do…

There is a difference in the quality of "ALL" cables, it depends on the quality of the system and if it is well calibrated and setup to show you those differences. As far as brand of cables each manufacturer of cables has his or her own philosophy of whats important when designing cables. Cables are tricky to choose as higher price does not guarantee you better picture or sound. You can choose cables by reviews or in most cases the hi-end dealers will even allow you to try a few difference models at home for you to evaluate yourself.
The chain stores do not carry the better brands of cables that are worth the difference, go to your local independent hi-end audio stores as they have the better brands, are much more knowledgeable, and will even allow you to evaluate in your home before final purchase.
And no size has nothing to do with the quality of the cable, as well as gold connectors.
Gold is not the best conductor its only used because it does not oxidize, and it looks expensive.
