I think the biggest change from pre-digital age writing is the amount of planning. Back in the days of typewriters, people made outlines. Writers planned the topic paragraph and each paragraph after that. The authors reviews the outline to be sure that one idea logically lead to the next idea.
After writing the outlines, the authors made a rough draft. They reviewed the rough draft, and rewrote the entire article. It took at least 3 hours to write the outline. It then took at least 4 - 5 hours for the rough draft, and an equal amount of time to revise the rough draft to achieve the final product.
Today, writers decide what they want to write and make a rough draft in a single step. The grammar checkers and spell checkers make the process of writing the draft much faster. The scribe then edits the draft on the screen. He only changes the imperfections.
Instead of spending 3 or 4 days producing a paper, it can be done in a couple of hours.
The ability to compose quickly has shortened the time spent on writing. This has shortened the time spent on actually thinking about what is to be written about. The end result is sloppy, badly organized writing.
The use of spelling and grammar checkers has lead to some very unintended but amusing results. These tools are far from perfect.
Digital slang used in texting is slowly creeping into normal use. This can be very confusing to say the least.
