I have a 1T Western Digital external hard Drive that all of a sudden will not power up.?
Posted on Jul 08, 2010 under Digital news and reports |I am wounding if it makes sense to extract the hard drive from the case put it in another and see if it is still functional. I have a feeling the hard drive may be fine but it might just be the switch. I was using it with Mac time machine. It would automatily turn itself on and off during backups sitting in standby when not in use. The HD is only three months old and I have information I would like to get off without spending an arm and a leg.

Well, if you accidentally dropped or shake the hard drive too strong (yes, although they say they are portable, they are not) you get what is know as "the click of death" meaning that the little motor rotating the platters is broken or that some other part inside the HDD is damaged…
For your pictures and all that valueable stuff, my recommendation is to get a USB 3.0 pen drive or portable SSD…
I work as a video editor and trust me, the worst that can happen is to loose all your precious work, because of a HDD failure…

I assume that if you open the HDD case, you will loose your warranty…a normal HDD repair, depending where you are could cost around 70 USD or more…
Let me know if you fixed the problem, but I would bring it to a repair shop who honors your warranty or send it back to the manufacturer…
