Western Digital External Hard Drive "My Passport Essential"?

… Maybe its not and I just think it is, can someone help me verify if its dead?…
Every time I plug it up, the light comes on, and I hear a little "DING" noise in windows… Shortly after, a little box comes up and asks if i want to open it in folders etc… And then when I go to My Computer, I am able to /explore the External…
Now, when I plug it in, NOTHING happens in my OS… (windows xp)… The only thing I can see happening on the device is the small light is flashing… nonstop flashing… its not rapid, just a steady pulse…
Can anyone out there please help me?!?! Am I honestly going to lose ALL of the data on this external?…

Try a different USB port and see if it still works. I am quite worried because I don’t like external hard drives dying, in fact, no one does.
It does sound like your hard drive has died. Feel it and see if it is vibrating and also, if there is a whirring sound. If you have all of those checked off, then your hard drive is safe. Then, go check it on another computer, if you have another, to see if it is just your computer that is acting up.
If you did not check those things off, then pray and hope that it is still alive. Your drive shouldn’t die that fast, it can last about 10 years…or so.

Windows is not seeing the drive, in the chain , it’s not mounted or called linking r linked, the ding is windows letting u know a usb device has been added ot disconnected. Check disk managment is storage u will see ur drives in the chain, if ur drive is not in there it needs to be mounted, it’s like changing a drive letter,like it u had c,d,e,& f, drives u would ur drive t g, & in that change is the mount place a mark in it a click ok
