Beyond the amount of storage size, rechargable battery, monitor display size and name brand, (which I do not care about). What else should I consider when buying a digital SLR?

My mother gave me a sony digital camera 4.1 mega pixels cyber shot..because she simply didnt know how to use it and wen tout and got herself another one..she didnt have the handbook anymore so thats not help..and i dont understand how to work it to change the picture and what not..
every time i take a picture it comes out blurry..and when i do take a picture.. i wanna take snap shots of my son..and it taken like 10 seconds before it snaps the photo.. and i miss what i want taken..and its like a triple flash..
and i dont know how to get the flash off at all..its not written in the menu.. its more like symbols..
if any body has any idea where i can get the instructions off the internet.. or can simply tell me what to do it would be great..

It turns on, but after it does the screen does not come on and it will not allow you to take pics. When this happens it also leaves the lens out like its ready to take a pic. I try replacing the batteries and that works for like 2 pics and then it starts acting up again. I know it is not the batteries, does anyone know what to do???

A Google search said they are caused by reflections off of dust particles , and the sensitivity of the CCD. I never get them without flash.
