How do I use an external microphone with my digital camcorder?

I bought a digital camcorder (Panasonic HDC-HS9) and I would like to plug in an external microphone for various live music applications. How do I do this? The built-in mic isn’t the greatest at picking up the low-end frequencies. The user’s manual doesn’t say anything about external mics.

The only possible places I could see to plug in a mic would be in the A/V jack, but I think that’s an output jack, not an input. There’s also a “component” jack, but I don’t know what that’s for. It looks like a deformed USB port. It also has a separate USB port.

I’m actually a little mad at the Best Buy salesman (or should I say salesboy). He told me the the camera records in MPEG format. Well, it doesn’t. It records in some weird format which you have to download to your computer, then use special software to convert the files. You need twice as much memory as the file itself in order to even do the conversion, so my computer can’t even handle a file that’s only an hour long. The salesboy also told me I could plug in a microphone, but so far I don’t see how. Please help!
